Balaton Cocktail
Zwack is one of my favorite discoveries through this process of exploring recipes from around the world. It is an herbal bitter liquor that makes a fabulous Manhattan (Zwack-hatten), and adds a complexity to any cocktail it finds itself in.
This particular cocktail also gets a nice citrusy-sweet punch from the addition of marmalade! We thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Balaton Zwack Cocktail is '“named for Lake Balaton, a popular vacationing spot in Hungary.” We’ll just have to let the cocktail take us there.
Balaton
From Saveur
1 1⁄2 oz. Zwack liqueur
3⁄4 oz. fresh lemon juice, from 1/2 lemon
1⁄2 oz. simple syrup
1⁄2 oz. dry Vermouth, like Dolin Blanc
1 tsp. orange marmalade
3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
Soda water
Orange peel, for garnish
Combine all ingredients except soda water and orange peel in a cocktail shaker filled with ice; shake and strain into a rocks glass filled with a few ice cubes.
Top with soda water and garnish with a twisted orange peel.
